This construction was part of Houseworks exhibition in a Bristol terraced house which involved fifteen artists. The house was not occupied and was un-modernised: each of the artists responded by making an installation in part of the house which was specific to the character of the chosen corner or room.

The rooflight was decrepit and yet attempted to admit light to the stairwell via the attic, through a lay-light in the third floor ceiling. The design of the mid-summer day rooflight was determined precisely by the angle required to reflect the noon summer solstice sun vertically through the house to the foot of the staircase.

This very simple concept led to the construction of a five metre tall octagonal spire in three parts, whose top part was positioned at noon on June 21st so that the sun was reflected vertically the seventeen metres to the bottom of the stair.

The owner of the house wanted to keep the construction, but it was not given Planning Permission.
